WELCOME TO LET IT OUT LISTS a place to share: lessons I’m learning, conversations I’m having, and people, places, things, and ideas I’m recommending.

Hi, I’m Katie, I spend most days walking and talking to friends or strangers. I’m an interviewer, writer, and podcast producer. Since 2013 I’ve hosted the weekly interview podcast, Let It Out, which now has an archive of over 400 episodes, including conversations with Substack stars such as: Deenie Hartzog Mislock, Christy Harrison, Lynn Chen, Dr. Samantha Boardman, Rachelle Robinett, Marlee Grace, Stephanie Danler, and more. I also co-host Spiraling, a humorous mental health show. I’ve written for various publications, published a book in 2016, and now consult for brands and individuals on independent podcasting and creative strategy.

LET IT OUT is my fluid project centered around connection. It is a space for opening up to each other in conversations and to ourselves by writing.

It all began in 2013 with a long-form interview podcast

Sharing these recorded conversations led to: publishing a book, running online journaling workshops, making zines, and hosting in-person gatherings all centered around deepening connections. While talking openly can be a mirror to see ourselves through someone else, writing allows us to use our own intuition to gain self-awareness.

In 2019, I began producing and co-hosting Spiraling, an optimistic anxiety podcast, with Serena Wolf. And I help others new to the medium start podcasts with lessons from my experiences, expert advice from others, and community support in The Podcast Kit

A weekly newsletter has been sent with each episode for the last decade, but recently evolved into a list format.

LET IT OUT LISTS INCLUDES :

  • Lists: Several emails a month formatted into a themed list. Topics will vary from recommendations and rabbit holes, to links, to lessons learned, unqualified advice, conversation or writing prompts to ponder… (I once wrote a book which is about writing for emotional wellbeing (journaling) so prompts will likely be sprinkled in.)

  • Show Notes: If listening while driving, keep your hands on 10:00 and 2:00. No need to take your eyes off the road to jot down a title you heard because these will contain links to everything we mention as well as occasional visuals from the recordings.

  • TBD: Expect the unexpected, this is a loose operation, we’ll see where this goes as we go… or let me know what you are expecting from this newsletter and I’ll see if I can make that happen…

Why lists?

Brains love lists. And according to my non-exhaustive research, we always have.
I’m using the creative constraint of the format to help with the 3 things I’m worst at:
1. Brevity
2. Dosage
3. Accountability

Deenie said her newsletter BLURT “ ….It allows me to explore ideas, make (and learn from) mistakes, and doesn’t let me be too precious about my work.”

I hope this is the case for this iteration and that it is entertaining, comforting, or useful to you, so let me know topics you’d like a list about and I’ll try to make it happen.

Keep in touch…
